Retinal stroke: At age 80 a possible diagnosis is an occlusion of the main retinal artery (clog=clot) which usually causes permanent changes in the vision. Another possibility is temporal arteritis, which affects many vessels in the head. Your father should have a test called an ESR and should see either a retinal specialist or a neuro-ophthalmologist as soon as possible.
