Benign.: They are benign, and are simply blood collections from endometriosis. They occur commonly in people with endometriosis. The cause is not known. They frequently don't cause any symptoms at all, but they can be painful, or may felt on pelvic exam or seen on ultrasound as a mass. Their biggest significance is that they can be mistaken for something more serious, like ovarian cancer.
