Second opinion: Just like any other surgery get another opinion. And remember the final decision for surgery rests in your hands not the doctors.

Don't go back...: Lol. First of all you don't need an operation if you don;t have pain. And you certainly would not need a bunionectomy if there is no bunion. You can ask the doc what is the purpose of the surgery...If you wanted to, to try and figure out what they want to do and why...

Second opinion: Sometimes, a procedure can be used to treat problems other than the obvious. If you are having pain in the area, it is possible a bunionectomy procedure could correct it even though a bump isn't evident. Having said that, if you are uncomfortable with doctor's recommendation, get a second opinion.

Daily problems.: You can never get your original foot back with surgery, but if your feet are causing you to change your activities of daily living, or giving you pain on a daily basis, it's time to consider surgery. I don't generally recommend surgery for purely cosmetic reasons.

RUN AWAY!: I guess even the normal foot can be surgically corrected. Get a second opinion, but if you don't have pain, don't go for elective surgery.

Better communication: Tell your podiatrist your concerns. It sounds like they either did not explain the procedure (or the reason) very thoroughly, or all your questions were not answered. If you don't feel like you need foot surgery (i.e. If you don't have pain or it does not limit your activities), don't have the surgery! never have an elective procedure if you don't understand why you're having it done.

Get a second opinion: If you don't feel comfortable with the recommendation, get a second opinion. A bunionectomy is typically recommended if there is pain and if there is loss of function (where it is beginning to interfere with day to day activity). If you aren't experiencing either of these basic symptoms, you are smart to be skeptical.
