Lining of blood vssl: Cardiovascular disease most often is hardening of the arteries. The cells involved are usually the muscle cells that that lie in the center of the arterial wall. Vessels most often involved are those to the brain, heart, and legs. The process begins with the muscle of the vessel wall being replaced with inflammatory cells, then calcium and bone. Eventually the vessel narrows and may close off.
