A 45-year-old member asked:
what are ways to treat swollen ankles ?

Dr. Richard Sanders answered
Vascular Surgery 67 years experience
Depends on cause: Swelling of both ankles is due to a variety of diseases including heart failure, low blood proteins, liver failure, pregnancy and other systemic diseases. Swelling of just one leg is due to some type of venous or lymphatic blockage in that leg, or possibly a growth in the pelvis or groin on the same side.

A 28-year-old female asked:
I hav swollen ankles for a long time now. Anything serious?

Dr. Irv Loh answered
Cardiology 49 years experience
Probably not: Swollen ankles are most commonly associated with excess salt in diet, venous insufficiency (e.g., varicosities), compressive clothing. The specter of phlebitis (local heat, tenderness/pain) or heart failure (shortness of breath, fatigue) always lurk. If chronic, no gradual weight gain, and better in the morning, worse at end of day, probably not to worry too much. If otherwise, see your doctor!

What can I do for my swollen ankles.?

Dr. Jeoffry Gordon answered
Internal Medicine 54 years experience
Be careful: Depends on age and medical condition. In a healthy person the body measures salt concentration. Eating extra salt = extra water and gravity pulls it to the feet. Salt/water balance is regulated by the heart, liver and kidneys and disease of any of these organs can cause swollen ankles as first sign of an important problem.
