A member asked:

Does elavil (amitriptyline) help sensitive esophagus pain from gerd? my dr gave it to me said it helps digestive nerves? but doesn't it relax the les valve? or is a low dose not enough to affect it and out weighs it

Unlikely: I not aware of clinical use if this type of medication for use in disorders of te esophagus, particularly gerd. This medication works through norepinephrine and serotonin receptors, and the esophageal muscle primarily works via a Nitric Oxide pathway. As for sensory esophageal nerves, I am again unaware that tricyclic antidepressants have any effect. Be careful.

Don't overthink doc: You haven't told us the dose of Elavil (amitriptyline) prescribed, nor what symptoms are being treated with it. Like any drug, Elavil (amitriptyline) has desirable and undesirable effects--call your doctor about your concerns instead of trying to overthink him and then not taking your prescribed medication.
