See ophthalmologist.: A painful, red eye could be something as serious as acute glaucoma. And that can cause blindness if untreated. (and it could be something as simple as a foreign object in the eye!) I am concerned that your symptoms have occurred suddenly. It is reasonable to go to the emergency room for evaluation if your doctor's office is closed. Good luck. Lgromkomd.

Many possibilities: There are many possible causes for this combination of symptoms. Only an eye exam can determine what is going on. See an ophthalmologist soon for management of this.

Need exam: Your symptoms sound compatible with an inflammatory process such as uveitis (intraocular inflammation). An examination by an ophthalmogist is necessary to diagnose and treat your symptoms. It's also possible you have a blocked nasolacrimal duct with tearing and a red eye, but photophobia is not a symptom of this, and there is also painful swelling of the inner corner of the eyelid/nose region.
