Mouth Breathing : This often occurs when someone has nasal congestion and is mouth breathing during their sleep at night. We purse our lips which causes air to move around the sides of the tongue causing it to dry out. The throat may also become dry and painful.

Viral infection: The tongue has tonsil tissue on the sides and will swell up when under attack by viruses and bacterial infections. The length of time that an infection is symptomatic is about 10-14 days. I have found that rinsing with warm salt water helps to relieve some of the tongue symptoms. Take 1 tablespoon of salt to 4 oz of hot water.
