Diagnostic problem: Most eye infections in adults are viral, and run their course over a period of 1-3 weeks. Bacterial infections should respond to antibiotics, unless the bacteria is resistant, in which case a change in treatment should be made. Some eye infections are eye lid based, and may take a much longer course of treatment, sometimes months.

Can be: This is not normal and may reflect pockets of pus if not viral in hidden area around the eyes such as the nose, lacrimal glands, etc. This needs further evaluation.

It can : Inflammatory eye conditions can last weeks to months but in that time period they can cause blindness. An eye exam is recommended.
