May need xray: The best approach and the best answer depends on more history and an exam. Even "mild" activity can cause shin pain. Sometimes it is benign but annoying like "shin splints", but other times it can be a sign of a stress fracture which needs different treatment. Anytime something like pain persists for a long time, it is good to get checked. Coming and going is reassuring but best to be seen.
