It is fda approved to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and as an adjunct with antidepressants in the treatment of major depressive disorder. Serious side effects include tardive dyskinesia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, and metabolic syndrome with weight gain, risk of diabetes and elevated triglycerides.
