Metabolic Epidemic : Adult obesity is often the result of excessive carbohydrates and sugars which raise blood sugar levels, increase Insulin and lead to Insulin resistance. This leads to high triglycerides (and low hdl) and fat storage, then to depressed thyroid function. This metabolic syndrome is responsible for a large percentage of hypertention, diabetes, heart disease which is the cause of millions of deaths.

Usually based on BMI: Bmi correlates height and weight. Bmi greater than 30 equals obesity. In some people with a lot of muscle this may not be accurate waist to height ratio can also be used. Greater than 0.5 means obesity.
