Not to worry: They are crystals of uric acid and calcium and are most likely due to the mild dehydration that occurs in the newborn period while waiting for mom's milk to come in. They disappear quickly once the baby is eating well and there are no long term issues associated with them. They are very common.

Urate crystals: Especially in newborns who are mildly dehydrated or aren't feeding particularly well, urine can get concentrated to the point where urate crystals appear. Better hydration will cause those to disappear and improve urine output. Make sure there is frequent follow up with your pediatrician to make sure weight and nutrition are adequate.
