Appropriate meds: Some young children become so disoriented and dangerous to themselves and others that they need to be put on appropriate medication. The decision to use such medication should include attempts at behavior management and attention to any medical problems that may be present. This needs to include intense discussion with the family concerning all alternatives for treatment.

Sometimes: Unfortunately some children this young are psychotic and one recognized approach to their treatment is antipsychotics. Obviously the diagnosis should be made very carefully, alternative interventions should be discussed and considered, and great care taken in using these powerful and sometimes dangerous drugs. Inadequately treated child psychosis is a nightmare for the child and his/her family.
