Hives or urticaria: Hives are common. They can occur as an allergic reaction to an insect sting, a food or drug allergy or even to a virus (especially in kids). Cold temperatures can be a trigger. Frequently there is no cause found and in some with chronic hives (>6 weeks) there is an antibody directed against ige. This is called autoimmune urticaria. Treatment is avoidance of triggers and antihistamines.
