Several signs.: Sometimes you can see a cavity. It will be an area of the tooth that appears to have a hole in it. It may be a soft, brown or black spot. Sometimes you can't see it, but you feel abnormal sensitivity to cold, hot, sweet, salty or spicy things. If any of these signs are present, get to a dentist immediately!

No signs: There may be no visible signs at all. A cavity can develop in hard-to-clean areas that can't be seen or felt. Often there are signs and symptoms which can occur individually or in concert: 1) sensitivity when eating or drinking 2) a tooth that cracks or chips unexpectedly 3) discoloration (black, brown, orange or yellow) 4) a hole in the enamel.

It depends: Not every brown or black spot is a "cavity" a dentist can diagnose it properly.

Cold, sweets: Most cavities are not visible, especially to patients, until they are quite large. Sensitivity to cold, hot, and sweets are the most common indications. Some patients have absolutely no warning signs of active caries until they develop severe pain and then require root canal therapy. That is why it is so important to go for routine check-ups and x-rays to detect cavities in the earliest stages.

Pain: Sensitivity to cold and sweets are most common. Food stuck in your teeth is another.
