Respiratory failure.: Respiratory failure means that the person was unable to effectively take in oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide. This could be due to a failure in any of the respiratory system including the lungs, musculoskeletal system or even the brain, if the brain was not able to direct the rest of the body to breathe. What did the person die of? Whatever it was, it was complicated by respiratory failure.
