Is it standard to have toothache after a new crown is placed?

Sometimes: It really just depends on how bad the tooth was to begin with. Severely decayed teeth can be symptomatic for several weeks. Cracked teeth can be sensitive for months. Many times it is simply that the crown is a little high when you bite on it irritating the tooth. Retun to the dentist and let them know whats going on.

It is not standard: In my practice it is rare to have a tooth ache after. It would not be unusual for the tooth to be sensitive, but that should start to go away and feel better every day until you didn't notice it anymore. Unless you were warned that there might be a possible complication, i would want to know about it so i could help take care of the problem.

Short term: For a short period of time. Should settle down quickly. Make sure dentist knows of your symptoms. If still significant pain after 2 weeks, seek a second opinion.
