Acids...: There are many different types of "shock" (ex. Septic, hemmorhagic, etc.) but, in general, when shock occurs, excessive acids are produced in the blood due to the inflammatory cascade. One way to eliminate these acids is to exhale them but this requires increased work of breathing. Without intervention, fatigue ensues and respiratory failure occurs.
