Dr. Kim Fagan answered

Several options: The L5 and s1 nerve roots exit at the level of the lower spine and send fibers all the way to the foot. If compressed it can produce a radiculopathy. The sciatic nerve exits at lower buttock, extends down the leg and branches reach ankle/foot. If irritated it can produce sciatica. The piriformis muscle is located just above the sciatic notch. If compressed it can cause local pain and leg pain.
