Never: Playing pretend is a sign of a good imagination. The only concern i would have is if can not distinguish between real and fantasy at 8 years old.

Never stop: As long as the child (/teen/adult) knows what reality is and can function in it, there is no point to stifle the creativity and stress relief that imagination provides. There is nothing wrong with play.
