OCs: Menstrual cramps can be alleviated by nsaids (non steroidal anti-inflammtory) meds such as ibuprofen. Hormonal therapy, such as ocs, iud, or injectable Progesterone can be the most effective therapies for women who are not trying to become pregnant & who can take hormones. Conditions such as fibroids, polyps or endometriosis can be associated with cramps and may require surgical treatment.

If severe, see GYN.: Dysmenorrhea Tx: NSAID’s, SSRI’s, hormone meds, OTC meds containing diuretics, warm bath, heating pad, exercise & acupuncture are excellent for dysmenorrhea. Avoid caffeine, chocolate, alcohol & salt. Get GYN eval to R/O underlying pathology. Consider omega- 3 fatty acids, magnesium (supplementation or through diet) or Black Cohosh
