Phakic IOL: For patients with high degrees of myopia - a lens that is placed inside the eye (called a phakic intraocular lens) is a very safe and effective solution. This technology has been approved in the us for many years, and is very popular internationally as well. Since you are not a candidate for lasik - then you can certainly discuss with your doctor whether a phakic intraocular lens is an option.

ICL: If you correct to 20/20 or better vision with that prescription, you are likely a good candidate for the icl. It depends a little on why you are not a good lasik candidate as well as measurments of the front of your eye. See a doctor who specializes in icl and get a full evaluation.

You may still be OK: Lasik is approved, by the fda, for higher levels of myopia than -8.5. With that said, if your cornea is thin, you may not be a candidate for lasik. Prk (surface treatment with the laser) may be an alternative. Other alternatives are the icl or a clear lens exchange. The clear lens exchange would be an unusual choice in a 26 year old. The best quality of vision tends to be with an icl.
