Often used similarly: In social settings, people may say "i lost weight" because they have been dieting and exercising to lose fat (medically - "adipose" tissue) and not muscle. In medicine, we distinguish between these. For example, a patient with a digestive problem or severe infection may lose weight due to malnutrition. The weight reduction could be due to loss of both fat and muscle, and possibly fluids.
