Bifidobacterium: Bifidobacteriun bifidus is one of many probiotics that are found normally in the human body. Useful instead of meds for irritable bowel syndrome.

No benefit: Very unlikely probiotics are going to be of any help. Probiotics have shown no benefit even if used with antibiotics.

Probiotics: The use of probiotics has become more prevalent. They appear to be healthy to use. While available over the counter, you may still want to consult your primary care clinician.

What are the pros and cons of using milk enzyme-based toothpastes for young children?

Dr. Sarah Kohl

Unknown: Recently toothpaste manufacturers have added enzymes to their adult products to help combat biofilms which lead to plaque formation. Now milk-enzymes are added to new children's toothpastes, no data was found to support or refute the manufacturer's claims for children's teeth. Tooth cleaning by wiping or brushing should occur as soon as teeth erupt. Toothpaste is optional in the first few years.

A 30-year-old member asked:

How many units should I get when I buy a probiotic?

Dr. Christopher Guzik
Family Medicine 24 years experience
Depends on probiotic: The actual units of the probiotic is not as important as the composition and purity of the probiotic is. Those that require refridgeration contain live active probiotics which are more biologically active than dried products. Check with your doctor to see how much is right for your individualized needs.

A 18-year-old member asked:

Can you take two different brands of probiotics everyday such as align and acidophilus?

Dr. Shaym Puppala
Internal Medicine 25 years experience
Should be OK: One recommendation for dosing probiotics is to take them three to four times daily, with the total daily dose between 1 billion to 10 billion cfu (medscape). It seems many studies were done with lactobacillus, but other strains have also shown to be helpful either alone or in combination with each other.

Age Appropriate: That is a great question, because i know how big those enzyme supplement pills are! unfortunately, the answer to your question depends on the age of the child. It is best to devise an age-appropriate approach. I would also encourage you to reach out to other parents of CF kids, and see what they do! the CF foundation has an extensive list of local groups. Your pediatrician can also help!
