Not and STD: Group b streptococci carried in the vaginal canal or cervix can produce severe postpartum infections in both mother and infant, thus the testing, and if positive the need for preventive therapy.

Group B strep: Gbbs (group b strep) is a common bacteria that normally grows in the vagina or rectum of many women. It is important to treat in labor because it is a common cause of neonatal infections.

Not an STD: Check out mayo clinic at http://www.Mayoclinic.Com/health/group-b-strep/ds01107/dsection=causes for more info re group b strep. Think of it as being in the wrong place at the wrong time since it causes no problem if in the gut and only needs to be treated if pregnant as dr. Raff noted.
