Not correct: Hiatal hernia and reflux in the long term carries a risk for barrett's esophagitis which is precancerous, surgery is effective and most of the time can be done laparoscopically with excellent long term results and prevention of the precancerous changes.

No: If you have symptomatic reflux, first line treatment is diet and behavioral modification. Next is medication such as proton pump inhibitors or histamine blockers. If symptoms do not respond to above measures then a surgical procedure called a nissen fundoplication should be considered.
