What can i expect to happen during pelvic exams during pregnancy?

Typical exam: There is typically a normal pelvic exam during the initial visit, with pap smear, cultures for infection, and a bimanual exam to evaluate the size of the uterus and pelvis. Physicians will usually do pelvic exams (bimanual only) from 37 weeks on to check the cervix, but this isn't required, especially if you aren't contracting yet. Other exams may be indicated if you are having problems.

Monitor cervix: Pelvic exams during pregnancy are performed to rule out infections that might effect the pregnancy and determine if the cervix is dilated. These exams are infrequent except if you are having symptoms of uterine contractions or abnormal discharge.
