Teeth move: If i understand, you have retainers that you haven't worn in many years and they longer fit. Nobody would expect them to fit since without wearing them with frequency it is likely that the teeth have moved. The purpose of retainers is to stop this movement but that only happens if you wear the retainers.

To wear or not....: If you are happy with the position of your teeth as they are now, then you are lucky and there is no need to use any retainers at this point. If you would like them to look better, you would have to see an orthodontist who might be able to make some slight modifications of your teeth and then you would need a new set of retainers. The choice is yours.
