I had a knee replaced 18 months ago. is it ok for me to do squats and deadlifts with fairly heavy weights? i'm an otherwise healthy, 59 yr. old man.

Not advised: At face value you have an artificail knee. The plastic spacer (polyethlyene insert) is the weak link. The more you load it the higher probability of wearing it out faster. As you get older better off maintaining tone than trying to get bulk. These excercises are likely what lead to your knee breaking down to begin wih.
