You are doing OK: But also avoid backless shoes. Wear socks. If this persists, see podiatrist. May be a biomechanical reason why tis is happening or possibly a dermatitis of some type.

Needs debridement: A fissure/callous of the type you describe benefits from proper debridement by a podiatrist, followed by an emolient/keratolytic, like urea cream, to soften the surrounding skin.
