He should check: His blood sugar. If it is grossly abnormal, he should go to the er. In general, it is not a good idea to skip Insulin shots without a supervising physician.

Hospital: Type 1? Sounds like DKA which is a metabolic emergency. Forgoing Insulin for 3 days, vomiting and dehydration, highly doubt that Insulin shots are enough. Additionally, electrolyte imbalance must be evaluated and treated. Increased risk for brain swelling.
