Narcotic Misnomer: Narcotic is a legal term. It is a sedative/hypnotic that acts at the GABA receptor leading to induction of sleep/anxiolysis. Acts at the same receptor that other sedative/hypnotics agonize such as ethyl alcohol (etoh), benzodiazepines (eg, valium), & barbiturates (eg phenobarb.). Addiction in this class is notorious for having a particularly dangerous withdrawal syndrome (in etoh can be fatal).

No, it is a sedative: Lunesta (eszopiclone) is not a narcotic but is a sedative hypnotic. It can cause drowsiness.
