Mid-cycle: Women ovulate two weeks before their nest period; thus for a 28 day cycle - day 14, for a 30 day cycle day 16 etc. The fertile period is one and two days before ovulation, when the cervical mucous is most favorable. Incidentally, there is always sperm in the fallopian tubes if you are having sex 2-3 times a week, so you don't have to worry about it in general.
