Reconstructive Surg.: "flap surgery" refers to transferring tissue to replace missing form or function. Depending on the deficit, the flap can contain skin, fat, muscle, and/or bone. The definition of a flap implies that the blood supply is also being transferred together with the tissue type(s) and flaps are often used to cover difficult to heal wounds. Flap dissection requires intricate anatomic knowledge.

Recon Surgery: Flap surgeries are techniques where a surgeon can use tissue from one area, either near or distant, to reconstruct another area. This can be a random flap (bilobe flap) based on the vessels in the skin to an axial flap (pectoral flap) that is based on a named artery with a good blood supply to a free flap (fibula) where the blood supply (artery & venous drainage) are detached and reconnected.
