It is simply the: Removal or excision of a disc fragment that has herniated out of its normal position that is then causing nerve compression so its removal results in the decompression of the nerve. It is done through a small incision under magnification usually with an operative microscope and is typically an outpatient procedure.

Disc removal: This is when the intervertebral disc material is partially removed with the help of high magnification. This often reduces the size of the incision when compared to non magnified cases.

Herniation removal: In a microdiscectomy, a herniated disc fragment is removed through a small incision under magnification using either a microscope or surgical loupes.
