Skin cancer: Malignant melanoma is a cancer that begins usually in the pigmented cells (melanocytes) of the skin. It is generally considered the most dangerous form of skin cancer. Most cases are localized and caught fairly early but some people will develop widespread metastatic disease and die.

A biopsy must be taken to establish the diagnosis and plan treatment based upon the microscopic thickness of the lesion. This disease has become more prevalent in recent years and requires proper treatment to ensure a positive outcome.

Type of cancer: Malignant melanoma is a neoplasm of melanocytes or of the cells that develop from melanocytes. Melanocytes are cells that produce the dark pigment, melanin, which is responsible for the color of skin. They predominantly occur in skin, but are also found in other parts of the body, including the bowel, oral cavity and the eye.
