A member asked:

Can methimazole make you permanently hypothyroid? will labs return to normal once methimazole is stopped/reduced or is replacement hormone needed?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No: The effects of Methimazole itself will not cause hypothyroidismt. It is true that if the underlying cause of the hyperthyroidism has been treated (such as with i131) then continuation of the Methimazole may result in hypothyroidism as the i131 has its effect, but the Methimazole itself is not causing the hypothyroidism.
