Filter: The essentially act as a filter to trap oganisms or act as a site where oganisms are brought by certain immune cells. Here, the body forms antibodies to recognized the foreign organisms, i.e. Fight infection. There are small lymphatic channels (much like small blood vessel) that enter into and leave the lymph node. I am sure you could find many fine representation on the internet.

Small ovoid eg olive: Vary in size from smaller than a peanut, to cherry or olive size. They have tiny, virtually invisible lymphatic vessels which carry lymph to & from the node. Lymph node acts as a filter i.E for bacteria or malignant cells.
