GERD: Reflux is acid coming back out of the stomach. Meds like Prilosec are proton pump inhibitors. These proton pumps are what make the acid in the stomach. The medicines only work to inhibit the acid when actively producing acid. That happens after eating something. So, you should take the med and then eat your meal for it to work. Relief may take more than a day.

Be patient: As noted, proton pump inhibitors (ppis) take some time to have full effect. Ppis are not medications you take with expectation of immediate result. In general, you should expect improvement of "heartburn" pain/discomfort as soon as 72 hours after starting regular use. If you have esophageal injury/inflamation such as esophagitis, this will take more time to heal.
