Possibly: It would be nice if it could heal 100% without surgery, and apparently his doctors think that is possible -- that is why surgery has been avoided so far. However, sometimes surgery can help a great deal, esp when there is pain going into the leg. Can't give you an exact answer without knowing mri, phys exam, etc. It is possible surgery can be avoided but surgery might not be a bad thing for him.

Maybe: Symptoms usuall resolve on 6-8 weeks. Try the injection, if no relief surgery may be an option.
