Can you have an ankle replacement done after you have an ankle fusion?

Yes...maybe: This is possible, but it is a highly complex procedure and must be done by a trained foot and ankle orthopedic specialist who has extensive experience with total ankle replacement.

Replace post fusion: This can be done. However the results of an ankle replacement placed after an ankle fusion are not as good as an ankle replacement done from the start.

Sometimes: There are instances where a fusion can be 'taken down' to allow for an ankle replacement. But, not all ankle fusions can be taken down to allow for an ankle replacement as sometimes the fibula is partially removed. However, not all patients are even candidates for an ankle replacement-even before a fusion. Talk to a certified ankle replacement physician about options.
