Yes: Disk herniation may cause pain, numbness and weakness limiting activity and work. You may have to reduce the number of hours and stop working all together. Fortunately disk herniations are treated well by endoscopic spine surgery. This minimally invasive procedure is with a small video camera inserted through a pen sized tube. This allows direct visualization and removal of the disk.

It can but is : Usually self limiting as 90% get better non operatively and those that need surgery have a 90% success rate. Rarely, a disc herniation can cause permanent neurologic deficit but most of the time it is not a total disability.
