Are you sure it's a : Herniated disc? Unusual in a child. I'd take him to hus pediatrician if guarding" & limping are of sudden or recent onset to rule out tumor, trauma, or infection. He may need an MRI of the spine.

Confusing question: You don't get herniated disks in kids. They are unheard of before adult muscle mass is present along with some ageing. I kid can have a mild degree of "splinting" scoliosis if they have any pain in their side for any reason.They tend to lean toward the pain. Improvement depends on finding the source of the pain which could be as simple as a muscle pull or as bad as appendicitis.
