???: I assume third shift is related to work and this is the shift that has the least exposure to the public? Not sure of the exact reason but they probably are embarrassed about their teeth and would like to minimize their exposure to talking to new people.

Several issues: Third shift workers are often asleep during normal business hours when dental offices are typically open, limiting their access to dental care in many areas. Also, since many people get their caffeine through soda pop which is often loaded with sugar, third shift workers may have unique dietary issues as well as they switch to and from nocturnal living.

Inflammation: Recently inflammation has been theorized as a risk factor in increased decay rates. Since shift worker have disrupted and unnatural sleep habits that increase inflammation it is no surprise they have more tooth decay. In addition they may drink more coffee and caffeine drinks like red bull that contain sugar and /or acid.
