PTSD: Post traumatic stress disorder is a type of anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to life-threatening or extremely frightening situations -- such as war, rape/criminal assault, and disasters like earthquakes. Very complex forms of ptsd can result from childhood emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. Symptoms may include exaggerated startle response, nightmares, and avoidance/numbing.
