Depends: Spine MRI usually is done based on the region of the spine that is being imaged. This includes cervical (neck), thoracic (between neck and low back), lumbar (low back), and sacrum (tailbone included).

Spine imaging study: A person is placed inside a magnetic field that then rotates. This causes the molecules in the body to line up & then spin around when the magnet spins. When they spin, different structures have different molecues & emit different radio signals. A computer colors the signals for each area from white to gray to black. This makes a picture the physician can read. Radio telescopes work the same way.
