Infection: Swollen gums are caused by food being trapped and the bacteria creating an infection. Think of it like getting a splinter, the body is responding to the irritation by swelling up and trying to get rid of the irritation, but it can't. Same thing with swollen gums. The body can not control the infection because its being overwhelmed by the bacteria. It needs professional attention, see your dentist.

Puffy gums: Swollen gums are gums that are enlarged due to inflamation. They usually are a darker red color as opposed to a coral pink color. They typically bleed easily and are an indication of an underlying infection or recent trauma.

Infected gums: When teeth are not flossed and brushed as they should be the gums get infected. This makes for red, puffy swollen gums that can bleed easily. Instead of being pointed between the teeth, the gums are round and flabby.
