Overactive ( hyperthyroid) normal, and underactive thyroid glands are determined. Sometimes autoimmune conditions and tumors of the gland can be suspected. Radiology test: A thyroid scan is a radiologic test that employs a radioactive tracer and measures uptake by the gland. The test demonstrates functioning of the thyroid as well as nodules which may be present within the gland. It is particularly useful in evaluating patients with hyperthyroidism. This test does not define anatomy well, nor does it have the ability to differentiate malignant from benign nodules.
