Numbness of the hand: Carpal tunnel is caused by swelling in the wrist causing pressure on the median nerve. Many patients wake up with numbness at night. Swelling from some other reason is what often causes carpal tunnel syndrome. Surgery is done to divide a ligament that is the roof of the carpal tunnel-this relieves the pressure on the nerve thus relieving the symptoms of numbness.

No : Carpal tunnel is when the median nerve gets pinched at the level of the wrist. This "pinching" is done by the transverse carpal ligament which is longitudinally split during surgery. This can be done open or endoscopically.
